I wouldn't even say my design process is completely developed as of yet, but as an ever changing artist develops - so should their design process - while all the same keeping the basics in place are always extremely helpful.

This project I'm working on is a bit different, as the client is requiring us to develop the color scheme first and then we will move on to initial sketches for the logo. It may not be an ideal situation, that is developing the color scheme first, but I think working within the needs of your client is essential in design. And learning to go with the flow - is also essential to making sure that your needs as an artist, and the needs of your clients are both met.

After an initial consultation with the client, I can say I got a "feel" of the type of colors that we'd be working in. She's a young, passionate attorney in town that is looking to establish herself as someone that is approachable, passionate, but also knowledgeable in family law. She's not your typical attorney and I think use of lighter, more muted colors are going to be the direction to go.

So this takes me to step one of your design process - the face to face meeting.

Some new designers tend to shy away from these meetings for lack of confidence, but I'm telling you now that without them you're confidence level won't rise as quickly. It's within these meetings that you are able to express yourself, think on your toes, and really engage with someone that is interested in hearing about your design work and how it relates to their projects.

Let me take a step back - sometimes when you meet a client that is as passionate as their work as you are about yours you tend to get a "vibe" or a "feeling" as to what the direction the project will go. That is why it's so important to have these initial meetings face to face - whenever possible. Yes, it's easier to just try to read between the lines of an email, but there is something to be said about meeting someone and having that initial contact face to face. It also reassures the client that you are a real person and not just a robotic design entity on the other side of an email account. I think I've engaged more mentally on projects that I had the opportunity to meet the clients face to face - because you gain a better sense of what your client is doing and in turn a real passion for what it is their doing as well.

Bottom line is that you owe it to your client, and it will only make you a better designer.
